DAY 20 — The Pearl: Pressing Forward
DAY 20 — The Pearl: Pressing Forward
“Forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal...” — Philippians 3:13–14 (NKJV)
Principle to Live
The pearl of pressing forward is the freedom to release what is behind and continually respond to the upward call of Christ. I exchange regret for grace, yesterday’s victories for fresh pursuit, and the weight of the past for the freedom to move forward with Jesus.
The Pearl of Pressing Forward
My mom is over 90 years old, and she is an incredible woman. One of her secrets to a long life has been her attitude toward the difficulties of life. Her famous saying is, “You’ve got to press on!” When you ask her how she is doing, she does not complain about everything that is wrong; she simply says, “I’m pressing on!”
There is great wisdom in that simple attitude. Life gives all of us reasons to stop, look backward, complain, or become discouraged, but pressing on means refusing to let difficulty have the final word. We may not be able to change what happened yesterday, but we can choose the direction our hearts face today.
Paul understood this deeply. He had accomplished much, suffered much, and made mistakes he could never undo. He had once persecuted the very Church he later served, yet he refused to allow either his failures or his accomplishments to become the place where he lived. His attention was directed forward.
This is the pearl of pressing forward. The past can teach us, but it was never intended to imprison us. We can remember what God has done without trying to live on yesterday’s revelation, and we can learn from our mistakes without allowing them to become our identity.
Sometimes the hardest things to leave behind are not only our failures but also our successes. Yesterday’s victory can become today’s limitation when we assume God must always work the same way. Paul refused to settle for what he had already experienced because there was still more of Christ ahead.
The exchanged life teaches us that we do not move forward by dragging yesterday behind us. We exchange regret for grace, shame for righteousness, disappointment for hope, and dependence upon past accomplishments for fresh dependence upon the Holy Spirit.
Perhaps some of us are still having conversations in our minds that ended years ago. We replay what someone said, what we should have said, what we lost, what went wrong, or what we wish we could change. We cannot reach forward effectively while continually reaching backward emotionally.
Forgetting does not mean pretending something never happened. It means refusing to allow what happened to control where we are going. We can acknowledge the pain, receive healing, learn the lesson, and then release yesterday into the hands of God.
This also applies to our spiritual lives. We cannot live forever on yesterday’s encounter, yesterday’s anointing, yesterday’s testimony, or yesterday’s revelation. We can be grateful for everything God has done while still saying, “Jesus, I want to know You more today.”
Paul said, “I press toward the goal.” Pressing forward is not striving in self-effort; it is responding to the One who has already taken hold of us. We are not trying harder to create a future for ourselves; we are trusting and depending more as the Holy Spirit leads us into what the Father has prepared.
A practical question is, “What am I still carrying that belongs behind me?” It may be regret, offense, disappointment, shame, an old identity, a past success, or even an expectation of how life was supposed to turn out. Whatever keeps pulling our hearts backward can hinder us from embracing what God is doing today.
What a beautiful exchange. I release yesterday without dishonoring it, receive grace for today, and reach toward what Christ has placed before me. My past may explain part of my journey, but it does not determine my destination.
The pearl is not merely moving on. The pearl of pressing forward is discovering that there is still more of Jesus to know, more of His life to experience, and more of His purpose to walk in. Whatever today brings, by the grace of God I can say with confidence, “I’m pressing on!”
Prayer of Faith
Precious Heavenly Father, thank You that my past does not determine my future. I surrender regret, shame, disappointment, offense, old victories, and everything else that keeps pulling my heart backward.
Holy Spirit, help me learn from yesterday without living there. I exchange the weight of the past for Your grace today, and I choose to reach forward toward everything You have prepared for me in Christ.
I receive the pearl of pressing forward. Keep my heart pursuing Jesus, trusting Your leadership, and moving forward in the life and purpose You have placed before me. Whatever comes, by Your grace I will keep pressing on.
I am loved by You, precious Heavenly Father, filled with Your Holy Spirit, and alive in You, my precious Savior, Jesus Christ. In the powerful name of Jesus, amen.
